CALLED OUT BY MY SON

I learned a new word the other day, screenager

If you look that one up, you’ll find it says a screenager is a young person who spends a lot of time watching television, on a computer, or on a smartphone. Ok, makes sense.

But apparently, as I found out, you don’t have to be a young person to be a screenager.

Our son, Cooper, was back home for the recent Easter holiday. While back in the areas, he spent a few nights in Kansas City, hanging out with one of his old roommates.

Apparently, during one of their conversations, his old roommate commented that his dad had turned into a screenager, who was on his phone a lot and constantly sending his son videos to watch.  It was about that same time that I happened to send Cooper a YouTube video. Suddenly, I was being labeled a “screenager dad”, too!

He said they had a good laugh.

Now, in all fairness, I do like to watch YouTube...and I do send him videos from time to time...but only because I think they may interest him. And I definitely don’t do it all the time!

The video that got me labeled had to do with a new development that was just opening in KC, and Cooper used to live in KC, so I thought he might be interested. See, I’m just a caring father!

So, in the spirit of the screenager he accused me of being, I’m now sharing it with you, too! The link is below. It’s a story about a new development that just opened down in the Kansas City bottoms. What makes it unique is that it’s the first entertainment district ever built on an old, abandoned railroad bridge. That’s kind of cool!

See, I really don’t feel like I should be penalized for sharing!

So, now, Cooper has labeled me as a screenager...and he thinks that’s funny.  Ha, kids!

All I can say is, I’m too old to change my ways, so he’d better get used to it!

However, he’s in luck. The weather is getting nicer, the days are getting longer, and the world is getting a whole lot greener. I’m spending more time out in the yard, and that means less time in front of the screen!

Hopefully you’re spending more time outside, too. The spring we’ve all been waiting for is finally showing up, and that means there’s a lot to do...finally!

Enjoy your time outdoors, and if you need anything to help make that yard a little nicer, let us know.

P.S. I really do think you should check out that video about the railroad bridge development in KC. It’s pretty cool!

“Thymely” Advice... COLD WEATHER REBOUND

Things started waking up early this year, and unfortunately, the cold weather wasn’t over.

That left a mess.

A lot of new growth and early spring flowers were in full swing one day, and then brown and dead the next. Things were pretty ugly for a couple of weeks. Dead blooms hung from the trees, and everywhere you looked, the landscape was burnt and brown.

And the question everyone kept asking was, “What was going to happen”?

The answer I gave over and over is we’ll just have to wait and see. Obviously, we were going to miss out on some early spring blooms...that sucked...but folks wanted to know if things were dead.

I don’t have a crystal ball, but I do know that healthy plants want to grow. Just give them time, and most things tend to work out okay.

Now, about a month later, that seems to be what’s playing out.

Most things, if they were healthy enough, are pushing back out. There’s a lot of fresh green out there right now, even some later spring flowers. The garden marches on!

You still may have items that are looking a little rough. If you do, my advice is to be patient. Give them some more time before you write them off. I’d wait until at least Mother’s Day, maybe even Memorial Day, before you give up on things.

As new growth does come on, make sure you are taking good care of things.

If we hit a dry spell, do some watering. If you haven’t fertilized in a while, give things a light feeding. Just keep things happy, and hopefully your plants will do the rest.

And if you have specific questions, let us know.
