NOT SOUR ABOUT IT
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!
The last few weeks, I’ve been all messed up.
The way the holidays hit mid-week this year really threw off my internal “day-of-the-week” calendar. For a stretch there, Fridays felt a lot like Mondays!
But we’re back into a normal routine now.
And speaking of normal routine, my sourdough bread baking has become just that. For about a year now, I have been cranking out something from my sourdough starter, “Otis”, pretty much every weekend. It’s become my new routine, and I’ve really been enjoying doing it.
As I’ve gained experience, the bread has gotten better. I’ve also expanded my creations to include biscuits, English muffins, pizza crusts, and dinner rolls. I’ve still got plenty of room for improvement, but so far, nothing’s gone to waste!
I even got my first order for some fresh baked loaves this past Christmas season!
Technically, it was a request from my wife for some loaves to give out as Christmas gifts, but it was still an “order” as far as my normal baking routine is concerned.
I had to go into production overdrive, cranking out a dozen loaves in a weekly cycle that would normally produce two. For those of you who cook sourdough bread, you can appreciate the amount of time that took. For those of you that don’t, just trust me, it’s not as simple as just doubling a recipe... there were some real logistics that had to be worked out!
I spent a lot of time baking that week, and I got a lot more practice making bread, but I got it done; they turned out pretty good. I even learned some new loaf decorating techniques for the holiday season in the process.
Now, with the holidays behind us, life has fallen back into a more normal routine, and my breadmaking has done the same... and trust me, that’s a much more enjoyable pace!
Things are clipping along at a normal pace right now at the garden center, too.

For early January, that means things are pretty quiet. But you’ll still find us here, working away diligently, getting ready for a spring season that will be upon us before we know it.
If you need something, come see us! This is a great time of the year to sit down and talk things over. Bring us your questions, your challenges or your wants and wishes, and we’ll see what we can come up with.
The store is filling up with all kinds of flower and vegetable seeds, along with seed starting supplies to help get them growing. The greenhouse is staying full too, with new deliveries of houseplants, cactus, and succulents landing along with lots of pretty pots to give them the right finishing touch.
There’s plenty to check out. I hope you come see us!
