RIBS, ANYONE?

Well, that was fun...not!

I expected to see a little bit more of the cold stuff before winter finally gave way, but this last blast was not what I was planning on.

But as I’m writing this, although it’s still cold out, the sun is shining, the wind has subsided, and the world is starting to feel a whole lot better. It will be behind us soon.

We get a lot of ups and downs in our weather. That’s just to be expected. Despite this last little round winter, things are definitely trending towards spring.

At home, I’ve got my first round of veggies in the garden, and I’m making plans to sharpen the lawn mower blades in anticipation of the first cutting of the season. That’s going to be happening any day now.

Here at the store, we’re making big strides towards spring as well. Trucks are arriving almost daily, and the plant inventory is building back up...fast! Inside the greenhouse, it smells like spring! It’s filling up with early spring flowers, lots of perennials, cool-weather veggie transplants, and fountains of all sizes. Spring is happening!

And just in time, because this weekend, we’re officially kicking things off. This Saturday and Sunday is our Spring Kickoff Weekend!

We’ll be working hard all week getting ready, resetting the lot for the season, building displays, and just making sure we’re ready for the season. We’ll be transforming an empty lot into a nursery full of beautiful plants. Trust me, there will be a lot to see!

And on Saturday, we’ll have an extra treat. Bucket List BBQ will be on hand, serving up some of their amazing barbecue! They were a big hit last year, and we’re glad to have them back. And if you’re thirsty, we’ll also have the folks from Oasis Cocktail Truck on site as well. They will be set up in our greenhouse, serving up some refreshing liquid refreshments. It should be a great day!

We’re ready for spring, and we hope you are too. Come join us!

WHAT’S NEW? VEGGIES & FLOWERS!

Is it Spring? Is it Summer? Well, according to the calendar, it is Spring. According to Mother Nature, eh….it depends on the day, time of day, and even hour. It all changes so quickly. Which brings us to the question of what to plant now, for Spring color and edibles.

For color, pansies are an easy first choice. They can take the cool and cold, even freezing nights, and bloom during snow just to show off their super-blooming powers. And boy, are they fragrant! Just tucking a few in window boxes or near an often-used door will make you stop and smile, no matter the temperature.

Looking for something edible, cabbage and broccoli are a must! They produce great under cooler temps before the summer heat hits. Kale, lettuce, and cauliflower are a few other veggies that are suited for cooler weather. Let us help you choose the best spring color and veggies!

“Thymely” Advice... It’s Time For The Red Bag!

Fertilome For All-Season II Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer is the top choice for keeping your lawn free of unwanted crabgrass and other summer weeds this year...but that’s a long name...so, we just call it theRED Bag!

Applied properly, it will take the fight to crabgrass and a whole host of other troublesome lawn weeds. Now is a great time to get your application down. It’s the first application in our easy-to-apply 3-Step Lawn Program, and now is a great time to get it down.

And if you want crabgrass weed protection, but without the lawn food, we can help with that, too. It’s called Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Preventer, and it can go down now, too. This one is also great for helping keep landscape beds free from summer weeds.

Stop by, and we’ll help you figure out which one is right for you. And while you’re in the store, don’t forget to check out the Plant of the Month!

skinner SPRING KICK-OFF weekend IS HERE!

Asparagus, Rhubarb, and Strawberries!

It’s time to plant and now is the time to add asparagus, rhubarb and strawberries to your garden.

These plants are perennial. That means you plant them once and they come back for years...that’s a lot of good eating!

This is the time of the year we stock these plants as bare root crowns or divisions. They may look a little weird, but that’s one of the best ways to plant them. We can explain the process.

So, how many should you plant? As a general rule...

  • Asparagus – Plant 5 crowns per family member.

  • Rhubarb – One to three crowns per family of 4.

  • Strawberries – For fresh eating, 10 crowns per family member. For freezing or making jams or preserves, you’ll need more. Aim for 25-50 crowns per family member.

It will take a season or two before you get into good harvests, but once you do, you’ll discover the difference between store-bought and home-grown... and you’ll fall in love with home-grown.

Enjoy!
