THE MOLE WHISPERER
I hate moles.
Ok, maybe hate is a strong word...but they definitely aren’t my favorite!
I tolerate a little bit their activity, but when they push it too far...it’s game on!
Around here, controlling moles is my responsibility. At home too. And I’ve gotten pretty good at it.
Growing up, I watched my dad set mole traps all over the yard. We lived out in the country, and it was a big yard, and there were always moles somewhere.
Dad’s weapon of choice was a harpoon trap. He always had a couple hanging in the garage, ready to be deployed, and they saw a lot of action. He was very successful, almost always “solving” the problem. I helped him at times, stomping down their runs and helping set the traps at times, and I learned some of his “tricks”...find straighter runs, don’t disturb the tunnels too much, and be persistent.
That’s advice I still pass along today.
Mole battles are things I hear about all the time. Most of the time, folks are overwhelmed and frustrated...but you don’t need to be. Just follow my dad’s advice.
Find straighter runs
Don’t disturb the tunnels too much
Be persistent
That’s a good start, but you also need the right tool...a good mole trap.
Just like my dad, that’s how I take care of mole problems. Although I have Dad’s old harpoon-style traps hanging in the garage, I rarely use them anymore. My preference is scissor traps. They look like they sound...a couple of scissor-like jaws connected to a spring-loaded trigger. They are easy to set, and most importantly, I’m a lot more successful with them.
The trick is figuring out where to set them.
I came across a good video that does a great job of explaining just that...and a whole lot more. It popped up on my YouTube feed the other day, and after watching it, I knew it would be a good one to share. It’s from Kansas State Research and Extension, and it does a great job explaining how moles live, how they cause damage, and how best to control them. You can watch that here...

Now, it’s time for you to tackle your problem!
One additional tip I like to share… React to activity while it’s fresh. If you can’t tell if the tunnels you’re looking at are new
or old, press them all back down with your feet and watch for new ones. As soon as you see them, set your traps. If you don’t see new ones, the problem has already moved on.
Just keep your eyes open.
And if you need a scissor trap, we have them available here at the store.
Good luck!

it’s time for the red bag!
I’m sure by now you all have heard us mention the RED Bag a time or two over the month of February, but do you really know what we are talking about?
We offer a 3-Step Skinner Lawn Program designed to help maintain your lawn, and the RED Bag is one of the first fertilizers you would need to put down.
Fertilome For All-Season Crabgrass and Weed Preventer with Lawn Food...the RED Bag...is one of the top bags that we have for a pre-emergent currently. When applied properly, it will help fight crabgrass and a lot of different types of weeds as well. This feeds your lawn for up to 5 months and provides great weed control.
We recommend you start your project with the RED Bag now. Follow up next with Fertilome Lawn Food + Iron around Labor Day, and round out the year with Fertilome Winterizer. This is our Skinner 3-Step Lawn Program. Purchase all three bags in the spring, take the first one with you, and let us store the other two. We’ll call to remind you of when to put them down. We take the guesswork out of caring for your lawn!
Stop in and ask one of our friendly associates to tell you all about it today!
